Life Changes and Loss of Identity Counselling

Major life changes can affect us more deeply than we expect.

Even when change is something we’ve chosen such as a move, a separation or a new beginning. It can bring unexpected feelings of loss, uncertainty or disconnection from who we once were.

If you’re feeling unsettled or unsure of yourself right now, counselling can offer a steady space to pause, reflect and gently find your way forward.

When life shifts, it can feel like you’ve lost your footing...

You may be here because something in your life has changed and you’re noticing that things don’t quite feel the same.

Life changes I often support clients with include:

  • relationship breakdown or divorce
  • becoming newly single
  • relocation or major life transition
  • career or role changes
  • coming out or exploring sexuality
  • shifts in family dynamics
  • questioning your identity or direction
  • feeling disconnected from yourself

Sometimes these experiences bring relief alongside grief and both feelings are valid.

You Might Be Noticing

Many adults I work with describe feeling like they’ve “lost themselves,” alongside increased self-doubt or insecurity and exhaustion from people-pleasing.

You may be finding it difficult to know what you really want, feeling disconnected from others, struggling to prioritise your own needs, or questioning your identity and next steps.

For some, there is also a growing awareness that patterns such as over-giving or consistently putting others first are no longer sustainable.

Understanding the Role of Loss in Change

With many major life transitions, there is often an element of loss, even when the change is positive or necessary. You may be grieving the relationship you hoped would work, the version of yourself you used to be, the life you expected to have, a sense of certainty or security, or a feeling of connection with others or yourself. In our work together, we can gently explore what feels lost, what feels uncertain and what might be ready to emerge next.

How Counselling Can Support You

Therapy can provide a calm, supportive space to make sense of what has changed, explore who you are now, and understand long-standing patterns such as people-pleasing. It can help you build self-acceptance and self-trust, reconnect with your needs and boundaries and move forward in a way that feels more aligned with you. There is no pressure to have everything figured out, we work at your pace.

My approach

I offer person-centred counselling in a warm, non-judgemental environment where you can speak openly and honestly.

Together we create space for reflection, understanding and gentle change, always led by what feels most important for you.

Sessions are available in person in Whitley Bay or online across the UK.

If you’re navigating a life change and would like some support, you’re very welcome to get in touch for a free consultation.
